Tax Education: Amnesty
Several
states offer amnesty programs.
Usually these are opportunities to pay taxes without
interest or penalties as long as the payment is voluntary and
before a certain deadline.
The IRS does not offer an amnesty program.
The IRS has a policy of typically not criminally
prosecuting taxpayers who voluntarily report past due tax
liability, but they offer no guarantee of avoiding criminal
prosecution. In any
event, the IRS will always seek full payment of taxes,
penalties, and interest.
It
is usually not a good idea to wait for a state amnesty
program to start because the IRS interest and penalties continue
to mount.
People
are selling on the internet How-to-Get-Amnesty programs for IRS
taxes, but what they are really selling is either hype or just
normal tax advice repackaged to make is sound better than it
really is.
